Biography

What do you say about a man, who sings from the depths of his soul?

Who emotes with fevered passion and who makes love to his words?

Shane Philips is a wonder to the world, with his smooth looks and god-given vocals, he is poised to make waves in the music industry.

To hear him sing, you might not believe where Shane Philips grew up and calls home. His deeply channeled devotions to early American funk and soul music hardly scream his native Fergus Ontario or adopted Montreal. But as the Dalai Lama knows, the reincarnated never choose their time or place. Here and now, that's good news for fans on the hunt for star-quality soul.

Shane's style reaches back to the plush V8 grooves of Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia well before disco and house had had their way with them. Powerfully influenced by era icons like Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Larry Graham and Donny Hathaway, Shane pays respectful tribute to their legacies with a fresh vibe and new millennium 'retro-electro' sensibility all his own.

"Philips is very much his own man, and his command of the genre — both as a composer and a singer of great distinction and emotional power —— is impressive."
Greg Quill, Toronto Star 2006

Truly respected by his peers, Shane's talent first grabbed national attention in the US in his early teens when he took home first place in the 1993 Star Search contest televised nationally. He then made the leap to musical theatre becoming the late Sammy Davis Jr. in the hit show "The Rat Pack" which regularly toured North America and Europe. Since then, Shane has graced concert and festival stages across Canada with performances at The 2006 Ottawa Canada Day Celebration (his performance featured on CTV), The Toronto Jazz Festival and The 2006 Montreal International Jazz Festival of which he performed to a sold out crowd receiving rave reviews.

With the independent release of his first album, "Superfly" in 2000, Shane generated a huge response on Canadian radio stations and garnered twice daily radio play in the U.K. for two solid months. In 2004 Shane brought his signature style and a new batch of material to Montreal's MIXART Studios to produce his latest LP "Everybody" on the Mile End Records Label teaming up with long-time musical Partner Attila Toth and studio whiz Nicholas Petrowski (Arcade Fire).

"Montreal-based singer Shane Philips is definitely a throwback to '60s R%26B, though his sound is still fresh. Philips is a welcome shot in the arm for the local soul scene."
Gerard Dee, Montreal Mirror 2006

"Shane Philips is a talented composer and singer who performs with remarkable passion."
Jack Bond, CBC Radio Toronto 2004
